Jökulsárlón (Glacier Lagoon)

Updated: Apr 27, 2022

The most consistent thing to take my breath away in Iceland was… well… the ice. That sounds obvious, and I’ve seen glaciers before, but I never anticipated just how cool the ice in all of it’s different varieties would be. The combination of power and peace made for an experience I will never forget.

Glacier Lagoon (Jökulsárlón) was by far my favourite place in Iceland. This lagoon formed by decades of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier receding and leaving a lagoon in its place. Chunks of the glacier that break off eventually get swept into the Atlantic ocean and washed up on to Diamond Beach. I could have sat there for hours, staring at the little icebergs, hearing the crashes of ice chunks randomly falling into the water and watching the seal swim and dive.

The massive glacier that feeds the lagoon is like a gentle giant; silent and calm, but impossible to miss its presence. Contrast this with the distant crashes of collapsing icebergs and you're left with a reminder of the power of nature, even in the most serene places.
